Effective Leadership Style in Times of Crisis: A Fiji Case Study

Abstract

Effective leadership is crucial in every situation and in times of crises management, as leaders must navigate complex and unpredictable situations to guide their organisations to safety and success. This study examined the leadership styles employed by leaders in Fiji during times of crisis, focusing on their effectiveness in managing and resolving crises.

Through a case study approach, this research analysed the leadership styles of four secondary school principals from the four divisions (Central, Eastern, Western, and Northern) in Fiji during periods of crisis, including natural disasters, political instability, and health crises. The study examined the leadership behaviors, communication strategies, decision-making processes, and crisis response tactics employed by these leaders to address the challenges faced by the nation.

The findings of this study highlight the importance of adaptive leadership styles in times of crisis, as leaders must be able to respond quickly and decisively to changing circumstances. The study also identified the key characteristics of effective crisis leadership in Fiji, including transparency, empathy, collaboration, and resilience.

Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the leadership styles that are most effective in times of crisis management in Fiji, offering lessons and recommendations for leaders facing similar challenges in other contexts. By understanding and applying these lessons, leaders can enhance their ability to effectively navigate and overcome crises, ultimately leading to better outcomes for their organizations and communities.

The session addresses the conference themes: Leading well, Leading together, Leading with optimism well in the sense that during a crisis, leaders should be able to make sound decisions, work with a proactive and collaborative approach, and lead with a positive attitude. Biography

Mohini Devi

Dr. Mohini Devi is a Lecturer in Education at the University of Fiji, Suva Campus. She taught in various secondary schools in Fiji before joining the University of Fiji in 2012. She also served in various leadership positions such as the Head of Department Languages, Assistant Principal, and Vice Principal in the schools that she has taught. Currently, she coordinates Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership course and Master of Teaching courses at the University. Further to this, she coordinated the teacher training programme namely, Graduate Diploma in Teaching. Dr. Devi has also been endowed with the responsibility of coordinated the Suva Campus operations from 2013 to early 2019. Her research interest lies in the area of educational leadership. She has a vast teaching and learning experience and brings with her years of knowledge and expertise in issues affecting schools in the Pacific Islands mainly, Fiji, educational leadership, teacher education, and teaching and learning.
