Ka mua, ka muri: Leading Change While Honouring What Came Before

Presenter/s: Karyn Gray
Type: Leadership Story
Keywords: Leadership development, past experiences, effective leadership
Room: Cortina

Abstract

What does it mean to step into a place with its own history, identity, and way of being—and know that change is needed?

In this session, I share my leadership stories of coming into multiple school communities as a leader, learning to listen deeply to its kaupapa, and navigating the tensions between honouring what is already there and leading necessary change. Along the way, there have been lessons in patience, humility, courage, and clarity.

This is not a “how-to,” but an honest reflection on the realities of leadership—offering space for participants to reflect on their own experiences of leading change while holding the mana of the place and the people within it.
