Abstract
This interactive session introduces Fakafekauaga, a Niuean village philosophy grounded in service, relational stewardship, and collective wellbeing. While rooted in Niuean culture, Fakafekauaga offers a universal paradigm shift in educational leadership, challenging hierarchical and individualistic approaches and inviting leaders to adopt community-centred, relational, and collective ways of thinking.
Delegates will explore how Fakafekauaga honours the past through ancestral knowledge and intergenerational values, while demonstrating relevance for present-day educational practice in any context. Through facilitated discussion, participants will reflect on their leadership experiences and consider how principles such as interconnectedness, reciprocity, and collective responsibility can strengthen relationships, decision-making, and community engagement across schools and education systems.
Looking forward, Fakafekauaga provides a lens for designing inclusive, connected, and sustainable learning communities, encouraging leaders to nurture both people and environment. Participants will engage in dialogue that challenges assumptions, fosters critical reflection, and inspires action, offering practical ways to embed relational and collective approaches in leadership practice.
By the end of the session, delegates will leave with new perspectives, practical strategies, and renewed optimism, understanding how Fakafekauaga can transform educational leadership and strengthen school communities in both mainstream and culturally diverse settings.
Biography

George Makapatama
I am, above all else, a Tagata Fakafekau — a servant first. As Co-founder of FakaFekauaga Catalyst, I work to evolve leadership, governance, and organisational culture through Fakafekauaga, a Niuean philosophy centred on service, relational stewardship, and collective wellbeing.
Previously, as Deputy Director at ConCOVE Tūhura, I helped evolve vocational education and infrastructure leadership, supporting leaders and institutions to implement systems-change approaches that strengthened learning and organisational outcomes.
Across my career, I have led initiatives that embed servantship as an evolving paradigm, co-designed complex projects, and supported leaders in government, education, and community sectors. I am passionate about connecting Indigenous and Pasifika leadership philosophies with contemporary educational practice, helping leaders evolve their thinking, relationships, and impact to build inclusive, community-centred learning environments
