Abstract
Leadership in education is busy, complex and often pressured. In the middle of this, listening can quietly become rushed, reactive, or transactional, yet it remains one of the most underrated tools a leader has.
This interactive session explores listening as a practical leadership skill that strengthens trust, clarity and everyday decision-making. Drawing on my Master of Educational Leadership research and current doctoral study, we will focus on whakarongo pīkari (deep, deliberate and responsive listening) and what this looks like in real educational contexts.
You will practise a small number of simple, usable listening strategies that can immediately improve conversations, feedback discussions and team meetings. There will be time to think about how these approaches could fit within your own learning environment.
This workshop is practical and discussion-based. Expect paired activities, guided reflection and shared insight. You will leave with clearer awareness, sharper listening habits, and tools you can use in your next conversation.
